Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails. It is an antioxidant which contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and it also aids the normal function of the immune system. Selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function and also contributes to normal spermatogenesis.
Selenium exists in two forms: inorganic (selenate and selenite) and organic naturally occurring (selenomethionine and selenocysteine). Selenomethionine – the natural form - is highly bioavailable to the body and better absorbed by the gut than inorganic forms of selenium.
Selenium can also be found naturally in foods such as Brazil nuts, cereal grains, soybeans, and grassland legumes, though amounts vary vastly on the amount of selenium in the soil and over farming can have detrimental effects.
